Understanding How Menopause Impacts Eye Health

Dry eye symptoms in menopausal women

Menopause brings many changes, and one often overlooked area is eye health. Many menopausal women experience discomfort and changes in vision that can affect daily life. Understanding how menopause impacts the eyes helps women manage symptoms better and seek appropriate care. Here are three key ways menopause can affect eye health, especially related to dry eyes and discomfort.

Dry Eyes Increase During Menopause

One of the most common complaints among menopausal women is dry eyes. The drop in oestrogen levels affects tear production, leading to insufficient lubrication on the eye’s surface. This causes irritation, burning, and a gritty feeling. Research shows that hormonal changes reduce the quality and quantity of tears, making dry eyes more frequent and severe in menopausal women (Schaumberg et al., 2017). This dryness can worsen with environmental factors like air conditioning or screen time.

Changes in Corneal Thickness and Sensitivity

Menopause also influences the cornea, the clear front layer of the eye. Studies indicate that corneal thickness may decrease, and sensitivity can change during menopause (Kara et al., 2019). These changes can affect how the eye feels and responds to contact lenses or eye drops. Some women report increased discomfort wearing lenses or find their usual eye care products less effective. This shift can contribute to overall eye discomfort and challenges in maintaining eye health.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Side Effects on Eyes

Hormone Replacement Therapy is a common treatment for menopausal symptoms, but for some it can have side effects on the eyes. Some studies suggest that HRT may either improve or worsen dry eye symptoms depending on the type and dosage (Foster et al., 2018). Women using HRT should monitor their eye health closely and discuss any new or worsening symptoms with both their healthcare provider. and their optometrist. Adjusting treatment can help balance relief from menopausal symptoms with eye comfort.

Supporting Women Through These Changes

Eye discomfort during menopause can affect focus, productivity, and overall well-being. It’s important for workplaces and leaders to recognize these challenges. Subtle support, such as flexible breaks for eye rest or understanding the need for optometric and other healthcare appointments, can make a big difference. Encouraging open conversations about health helps create a supportive environment for menopausal women managing dry eyes and other symptoms.

Menopause is a natural phase, and while eye changes can be frustrating, many effective treatments and lifestyle adjustments exist. Staying informed and proactive about eye health empowers women to maintain comfort and clarity through this transition.
